Marin Sawa
"Textiles are far from one’s mind when one first sees the Algaerium installation (2009/2010) by the Japanese designer Marin Sawa. The starting point for her project was an interest in organic materials that are ‘smart’ by nature. With Algaerium, Sawa has created a series of ‘living’ textiles set in a spatial installation, in which algae react to natural light with fascinating colour changes. Sawa makes use of the process of photosynthesis, which serves as a green source of energy. Besides demonstrating the potential of algae as a future energy source, Sawa’s project shows how the material can be integrated into interiors and architecture in a functional and aesthetically attractive way. Soft Structures (2010/2011), the second contribution by Sawa, is a series of elegant silk scarves that have been screen-printed with thermochromic ink. The colour of the scarves alters in response to temperature changes."
